History Of Groundhog Day:

The Pennsylvania Dutch came from German-speaking Europe. If a badger came out on a bright day and cast a shadow, it signified winter would extend four more weeks.

German Lutherans celebrate Candlemas. Despite the Protestant Reformers' 16th-century opposition, folk religion includes rites and superstitions. For example, traditions use Candlemas weather to forecast spring.

Bears or foxes were substituted for badgers during Candlemas.

Due to a shortage of bears, Germany regarded the bear as a weather predictor.

In Pennsylvania, winter lasted six weeks instead of four in Germany on Groundhog Day. The Pennsylvania Dutch called the badger dox, which means "groundhog" in Deitsch.
