History says John Montagu, the 4th Earl of Sandwich, was the first person ever to create a sandwich. It is widely accepted that he is the namesake of the sandwich. November 3 is also the birthday of John Montagu.

The day is not a national holiday. Yet it is celebrated with the utmost enthusiasm and by guzzling down sandwiches!

History of National Sandwich Day

The history behind some meat inside some bread slices goes way back. Let's learn about them chronologically.

During the 1st century B.C., Hiller the Elder, a famous rabbi, first attempted to make a sandwich. He introduced the Passover ritual of eating sliced apples, chopped nuts, and bitter herbs inside traditional matzah. The fact that he was the first person ever to do this, the Hillel Sandwich, has become a custom during the Passover Seder

According to several ancient Roman sources, people have been placing cheese on bread and heating it up for at least the last two thousand years, contrary to the common belief that this practice is a recent innovation.

As stated earlier, John Montagu, the 4th Earl of Sandwich, is the story's hero of how the sandwich was named. He was famous for his habit of occasional gambling.

So, once in 1762, he requested that his chef make him a dinner that did not require any forks! Before that, he once visited the Eastern Mediterranean coast. There he saw that the Greeks served sandwiches with their incredibly delicious appetizers. He requested that his chef replicate the dish following their preparation techniques.

The earl could keep one hand free to continue playing his game when the chef presented him with sliced beef sandwiched between two pieces of bread.

We cannot say that it was Montagu or his chef who first created the sandwich because history shows evidence that the sandwich existed before Montagu asked for it.

Sandwiches had become a standard part of the English diet by the time of the American Revolutionary War

However, sandwiches did not become popular in the United States until 1815. People started noticing the ease of making this dish after the recipe for the sandwich was included in audio cookbooks in the United States.

Since then, America has found its new favorite meal!
