From 1948 to 1956, the original name of Karnataka was Mysore State. Mysore was governed by Jayachamarahendra Wodeyar, Maharaja of Mysore. However, Mysore didn’t become a part of India until after the British empire was overthrown.

From 1950 to 1956, Jayachamarajendra was the Rajpramukh and Governor of Mysore State. After that, the Karnataka State formation movement was initiated by Aluru Venkata Rao.

In 1956, the Kannada-speaking regions of Bombay, Coorg, Madras, and some parts of Hyderabad were unified as Mysore State on November 1. The state initially had 19 districts.

However, on November 1, 1973, the state adopted its current name Karnataka during the administration of Chief Minister Devaraj Arasu. Karnataka comes from the term Karunadu which means “Lofty Land.”

It is noteworthy that the day also celebrates the foundation of many additional states, including Kerala, Haryana, Punjab, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, and Rajasthan.
