The march took place on March 8, 1908, and involved 15,000 female workers from various parts of the city. Later this day was adopted and inspired to establish Women's Day worldwide.

2. Who initiated International Women’s Day?

While the female workers around the United States kept protesting, an influential Socialist in Germany named Clara Zetkin proposed the concept of celebrating IWD at the Copenhagen Conference in 1910. The plan received universal support even though no specific date could be agreed upon 

 Following the proclamation, a global movement of protest erupted to defend the rights of both male and female employees. For instance, on March 19, 1911, millions of people participated in marches and rallies worldwide.

However, the protests couldn't stop the unfortunate events keep happening. One of them is the tragedy at the Triangle Shirtwaist Company. More than 140 young female workers, mainly Jews or immigrants from Italy, were killed in this accident. This terrible incident is still remembered today.

After that, IWD was observed in Russia in February 1913 for the first time; in 1917, the government granted voting rights to Russian women. 

Women all around Europe also united with this movement.  

3. Declaration of the Date

The United Nations significantly contributed to the adoption and global recognition of International Women’s Day. Several international conferences have been held to increase awareness of the fundamental human rights that women cannot access in developing or developing nations.
